Vienna, Austria
Christmas is a holiday of spectacular music, and no place is this more true than in Vienna, the epymonious city of music. Vienna shines during the holidays, when its many great musical institutions, from the small ensembles that perform in cafes and streetcorners to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, pull out all the stops. But the hottest ticket in town during Christmas week is the annual Christmas in Vienna concert, performed by some of the world’s greatest entertainers including the Vienna Boys Choir.
The Vienna Boys Choir is the world’s most famous professional children’s choir. Having celebrated its five hundredth anniversary a few years ago, it is also one of the world’s oldest continually active music institutions. They have performed with some of Vienna’s most storied composers, including local favorite Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and in some cases the composers were former members of the choir, such as Franz Schubert. The choir performs upwards of three hundred concerts annually, to as many as half a million enthralled listeners. The Christmas in Vienna concert has been a cornerstone of the choir’s annual performance schedule for many years.
While the Christmas in Vienna concert is most famous for the Vienna Boys Choir, it is also a venue for many other popular singers, as well as Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. The program usually includes a mix of classic Christmas music, popular Christmas music and holiday music from around the world.
The Christmas in Vienna concert usually takes place on the Sunday before Christmas Eve. Not surprisingly, tickets for this one annual performance are extremely difficult and expensive to get. For those who can’t get their hands on tickets, there is also the Vienna Boys Choir practice performance which usually takes place a few days earlier. Times and ticket prices for the Christmas in Vienna concert were not available as of the time of this writing. Web: www.christmasinvienna.com (official website of the Christmas in Vienna concert)
