April 15, 2015 By Howard Kramer Leave a Comment

Xi’an, China The first Muslim envoys reached China almost as early as the first Muslim armies reached North Africa, and began peacefully establishing communities there almost immediately.  These ancient Islamic settlements of China, small though they were, are nevertheless among the oldest continually active Muslim communities in the world.  The Great Mosque of Xi’an is a … [Read more...]

RUINS OF ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

Macau, China Although the Catholic Church did not penetrate very far into China, or northeast Asia in general, it did gain a strong foothold in the Portuguese territory of Macau, the first and last European colony in China.  Its principal church, the Cathedral of St. Paul, was established by Jesuit Missionaries, and for many years was the largest Christian edifice in the Far … [Read more...]

WALLED CITY OF PINGYAO

December 20, 2014 By Howard Kramer Leave a Comment

BASILICA OF ST. DENIS

Last month, I visited one of the most fascinating churches I have ever been to, the almost completely ignored Basilica of St. Denis in the northern suburbs of Paris.  Almost every French monarch is buried here, and almost nobody goes here.  Here are some pics I took:
