The Cave of the Crystals, an extension of the famous Naica Mine, is one of the most unique places on Earth. It is home to a veritable forest of immense cave crystals, some of the largest ever discovered. Only known since the year 2000, this magnificent cave is unfortunately not open to the general public, though scientific exploration is ongoing.
The Naica Mine is an important natural resource where silver, zinc and lead have been mined for over a century. An early crystal cave known as the Cave of Swords was discovered by workers here in 1910. The massive Giant Crystal Cave was not discovered until 2000, when several other smaller chambers were also discovered. Scientific study of the caves has continued for over a decade.
The main chamber of the Cave of Crystals is home to hundreds of absolutely enourmous crystal formations, the largest topping out at 39 feet in length and weighing over fifty tons. The crystal growths are so thick that deep progress into the cave is all but impossible. Moreover, due to its position over a magma chamber, the crystal cavern can climb to nearly 60 degrees Celsius, making casual exploration without specialized equipment all but impossible.
Access to the caves are strictly through and at the discretion of the owners of the Naica Mine, and visiting is extremely restricted. No other information was available as of the time of this writing. Web: N/A.
