The Dubai Mall Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is one of the newest and most interesting aquariums in the world. Located inside the world’s largest shopping mall, it is the largest aquarium in the Middle East, and one of the most popular wildlife attractions on the Arabian Peninsula. It boasts several record-setting features, including the world’s largest viewing window.
The Dubai Mall is one of the projects that has contributed to the city of Dubai’s massive renaissance of the last few decades. Designed to appeal to the country’s wealthy international crowd, it opened in 2008 with the largest amount of retail space and stores anywhere. The showpiece attraction, the huge aquarium, was opened shortly thereafter.
The aquarium is immense, and is only smaller than some of its rivals due to space constraints in the mall. It has two record setting features. One is the world’s largest acrylic panel wall, with 265 square meters in surface and three-quarters of a meter thick. The other is a 360 degree vision tunnel, one of the most extensive yet built. Behind these barriers are over 30,000 fish and other marine creatures including large numbers of sharks. There is also an underwater zoo which features animals such as crocodiles.
The Dubai Mall Aquarium is located on the south side of Dubai approximately four miles from the city center. It is open year round every day from 10:00am-9:00pm. The cost of admission is $19.00. Web: www.emiratesyoo.com/dubai-aquarium (official website).
