Israel/Palestine (N/A) – Biblical Site of the Sermon on the Mount
Mount Eremos, better known as the Mount of Beatitudes, is the hill which is traditionally associated with the Sermon on the Mount. Located (according to the Bible) between Capernaum and Gennesaret, Eremos has been recognized as the site of the Beatitudes since the late Roman era, but is not entirely certain. There are currently no other major candidates recognized.
At the height of His ministry, Jesus delivered his greatest oration, and one of the most famous in history: the Sermon on the Mount. Because of this it has been an important site of Christian pilgrimage for well over a thousand years. The ruins of a Byzantine era church still stand on the mountain. A newer church, the Roman Catholic Chapel of the Beatitudes, is now the primary destination for pilgrims. Strangely, it was sponsored by the infamous Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
The Mount of Beatitudes is located completely within the borders of Israel immediately next to the city Tabgha, approximately 80 miles north of Jerusalem. Because of this it is in a very safe location and one of the most visited Christian sites in Israel.
