Kolkata, West Bengal St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kolkata is the largest Anglican church in India and among the largest in Asia. Located in what was for over a century the capital of British India, St. Paul’s was of particular religious and political importance throughout much of the British colonial era. ST. MARY’S CHURCH

August 12, 2015 By Howard Kramer Leave a Comment

Chennai, Tamil Nadu St. Mary’s Church is the oldest purpose-built Anglican church building in India. A part of the first British settlement in the Subcontinent, it is for all intents and purposes the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion in the Far East. Constructed to withstand the hard realities of the wars of the colonial era, St. Mary’s has survived virtually intact to … [Read more...]

ABBEY OF WESTMINSTER

February 15, 2015 By Howard Kramer Leave a Comment

London, England The cathedral of Westminster Abbey has long served as England’s royal church (its official designation is technically a ‘royal peculiar’), and has been an important place of pilgrimage since before the Protestant Reformation.  The great majority of England’s monarchs were both coronated and buried here; among the latter being Edward the Confessor, who is … [Read more...]

CATHEDRAL OF DURHAM

February 15, 2015 By Howard Kramer Leave a Comment

Durham, England Durham Cathedral is one of the most famous churches in England outside of London.  It is also one of the most seen cathedrals of all time, though most people don’t realize that they have seen it. Both the interior and exterior were used for shooting scenes of Hogwart’s Castle in various Harry Potter movies.  Architecturally, it is considered one of the finest, … [Read more...]

BOAR’S HEAD & YULE LOG FESTIVAL

Cincinnati, Ohio The traditions of the Boar’s Head Feast and the Yule Log both date back many centuries, and celebrations of both can be found around the world.  However, in the United States, no place celebrates the Boar’s Head and the Yule Log like the congregation of Christ Church Cathedral in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Inaugurated in 1940, it is not only one of the longest … [Read more...]

HISTORIC ANGLICAN CATHEDRALS OF LONDON

London, England While Canterbury Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Church and the mother church of all denominations within the Anglican Communion, it is Westminster Abbey, and to a lesser extent St. Paul’s Cathedral, that are the public faces of the Church of England.  Westminster Abbey, classified as a Royal Peculiar, has been the unofficial church of the English … [Read more...]

CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

Canterbury, England Canterbury Cathedral is the headquarters of the Anglican Church and for most of the Middle Ages it was also England’s greatest pilgrimage shrine.  Interestingly, Canterbury is neither England’s first Christian city (Glastonbury), nor is its Cathedral the most impressive (Winchester Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral) or famous (Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s … [Read more...]

BASILICA OF ST. DENIS

Last month, I visited one of the most fascinating churches I have ever been to, the almost completely ignored Basilica of St. Denis in the northern suburbs of Paris.  Almost every French monarch is buried here, and almost nobody goes here.  Here are some pics I took:
