GREAT PASSION PLAY

Eureka Springs, Arkansas Eureka Springs, Arkansas is home to a number of interesting Christian sites, largely a legacy of Gerald Smith.  A prominent if controversial figure, Smith turned Eureka Springs into something of a religious vacation destination.  Here he established a center with everything from a Bible Museum to the largest statue of Christ in the United States.  … [Read more...]

HOLY LAND EXPERIENCE

HOLY LAND EXPERIENCE

Orlando, Florida The Holy Land Experience, located in the midst of Orlando’s theme-park belt, is a living museum of sorts dedicated to recreating life in Jerusalem as it might have been during the late Second Temple period.  Although it has been criticized for ‘Disney’-fying Christianity and the life of Christ, it nevertheless offers a fascinating and unique window into the … [Read more...]

WEDDING CHAPELS OF LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas, Nevada One of America’s strangest religious institutions, for lack of a better term, can be found in one of America’s strangest cities: Las Vegas.  Here, lining the famous Strip and elsewhere throughout the city, can be found dozens of small churches, almost all of which cater exclusively to weddings.  Here, in America’s wedding capital, countless couples tie the … [Read more...]

AFRICAN MEGACHURCHES OF LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles, California Though not traditionally thought of as a Bible Belt state, the sheer size of California and its sprawling cities has encouraged the development of Megachurches, especially in and around the Los Angeles area.  Los Angeles boasts almost as many major megachurches as Houston and Atlanta, and some of the best known of these are traditional African … [Read more...]

MEGACHURCHES OF ATLANTA

Atlanta, Georgia If there is one city in America that rivals Houston in its megachurches, than that city is Atlanta.  In many ways, Atlanta is the definitive Bible Belt city.  After California and Texas, Georgia boasts the third highest number of megachurches of any state, and Atlanta claims over twenty of these with congregations in excess of five thousand regular … [Read more...]

MEGACHURCHES OF HOUSTON

Houston, Texas Over the last few decades, Protestant Christianity has seen the development of a new phenomenon, especially in the United States: the Megachurch.  These Megachurches are exactly what they sound like: huge community churches with very large, regularly attending congregations.  At last count, there were over one thousand such churches in the United States.  Not … [Read more...]

BASILICA OF ST. DENIS

Last month, I visited one of the most fascinating churches I have ever been to, the almost completely ignored Basilica of St. Denis in the northern suburbs of Paris.  Almost every French monarch is buried here, and almost nobody goes here.  Here are some pics I took:
